Back To School Fabulous
by Avram Ramage · Martin Luther King
For most teens in Nashville, school will be starting back this Monday, August 15, complete with lists of supplies, books that were supposed to be read, and, for those to whom it is an issue, new clothes.

So while these last moments of summer break will probably be packed with cramming in summer reading and final bits of fun, everyone’s going to have to hit the shops eventually.

Luckily this year I didn’t procrastinate and can offer what little I’ve learned as help to anyone else who’s holding off until they get their lists on Monday.

First of all if you need some clothes (or replacements for newly banned t-shirts) ignore any back to school sale ads and hit upTarget , thrift shops, and, one of my personal favorites, Goodwill.

It may be tempting for some of you to go out and hit the mall or Hot Topic in search of clothes you can wear to school (like a Nirvana’s Nevermind t-shirt without the cover art on the front), but this is not the time.

Despite the fact that many stores are holding back-to-school sales, the prices still tend not to equal out. For example, utility jeans at Banana Republic can go for $78. At Target, you’ll find a pair for $25. And it should be noted that Gap will give you a free iTunes download just for trying on a pair of original jeans.

Regular Jeans go for $40 at Gap, around $20 at Target, and $7.49 at Goodwill (one of the most expensive items you’ll find there).

As for actual school supplies, Staples and Office Depot generally work well, often, but not always, beating out Target, Wal Mart, and CompUSA. There is something to be said for knocking off the entire list in one place though, and since the price differences often come down to quarters and dimes then there isn’t too much of a reason to favor any one over another.

So for everyone who’s procrastinated until the last possible moment, and for those who are just waiting to get their lists on Monday, I wish you luck. Always remember the wonders of Goodwill and Target clearance (rivaled only by those of yard sales and eBay) and try to restrain yourselves if you’re shopping for clothes.
